A Mazurka trilogy with the Polish pianist Aleksandra Bobrowska – a celebration of energy, poetry, nostalgia and much more.

Chopin's mazurkas – those works of the Polish genius bursting with verve and strength, at times nostalgic and poetic, which accompanied him throughout his life – leave no listener cold. Of the 57 existing mazurkas by Chopin, he published 43 during his lifetime. The young Polish pianist Aleksandra Bobrowska has not only recorded these on CD, she also performs them regularly in concert, on both modern and historical pianos.

In Darmstadt she presents these 43 mazurkas over two evenings on the great Steinway concert grand at the Literaturhaus, each preceded by a short introductory talk. The subject is explored further in a public master class lasting several hours with three students of the Darmstadt Akademie für Tonkunst on Saturday afternoon. And for the very young there is a mazurka dancing and crafting hour on Sunday afternoon. Please bring a seat cushion, coloured pencils, scissors and a glue stick. Aleksandra Bobrowska is a versatile artist who has performed in most European countries as well as in China, Japan, Russia and the USA. Each of her last three concert seasons before the pandemic comprised over a hundred appearances. She regularly gives piano recitals in Warsaw, preceded by introductory talks on the content of her programmes. The artist also conveys her deep understanding of Chopin's music and her detailed knowledge of his life, paired with her love of theatre, in stage performances about Chopin's loves and life.

Since taking part in the First International Chopin Piano Competition on Period Instruments in Warsaw in 2018, she has discovered a fascination for historical pianos and now gives concerts on both types of instrument. Alongside Chopin's Romantic works, she also enjoys playing music from various periods, including Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Grieg, Fauré, Ravel and Debussy. She is a graduate of the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester (BMus Hons), and of the Haute École de Musique.
