About us
More than 50 years of the Chopin Society – a society with tradition and clear aims
In 1970, at a time when there were neither treaties nor any official cultural exchange between the Federal Republic of Germany and the People's Republic of Poland, the “Chopin Society in the Federal Republic of Germany” was founded in Darmstadt on the initiative of the Polish pianist Maciej Lukaszczyk (1934–2014), who served as its President until March 2014. He was succeeded by the Polish pianist Aleksandra Mikulska and, since June 2024, by Jill Rabenau.
For more than 50 years our society, recognised as a non-profit organisation, has been committed to the following aims:
Deepening and spreading knowledge of the life and work of Fryderyk Chopin (1810–1849)
Promoting piano teaching of the highest quality in the tradition of Chopin
Targeted support and development of young pianists
International exchange and close cooperation with Chopin societies and institutes worldwide
Strengthening German-Polish cultural exchange as a bridge between two rich musical traditions
The Chopin Society is a member of the International Federation of Chopin Societies (IFCS), which currently comprises some 40 member societies. The Federation is a member of UNESCO and, since 1989, of the International Music Council (IMC).
The Chopin Society is also a member of the Alink-Argerich Foundation.

Would you like to become a member?
Members receive reduced admission to all events as well as regular information about the society's activities. The Chopin Society is recognised as a non-profit association by the Darmstadt tax office and is entitled to issue donation receipts.

Support our work
The Chopin Society is a non-profit association recognised by the Darmstadt tax office. For over 50 years we have been dedicated to preserving our musical heritage, supporting young pianists and fostering German-Polish cultural exchange in the Darmstadt region. As a volunteer-run association we depend on donations in order to continue presenting our concerts, masterclasses and competitions at the highest level. We are sincerely grateful for every contribution – it goes directly towards supporting the arts. Donation receipts are of course issued.
