Reading with Music

Love, marriage, pastimes – caprices from the Belle Époque

    About the event

With his depictions of bourgeois life in late 19th-century Paris, Guy de Maupassant is among the best-known portraitists of his time. The author strikes his finest sparks when he tells of the longing and the dreams slumbering behind the idyllic façade of couples' relationships.

Susanne Schäfer, known from numerous films and theatre productions, brings Maupassant's heroines vividly to life with her mellifluous voice. She is accompanied by the pianist Rolf Kohlrausch, who comments musically on the stories with masterfully played pieces by Chopin and Debussy.

Susanne Schäfer has worked with Peter Zadek, Michael Bogdanov and Christian Stückl, among others. Her engagements have included the Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg, the Salzburg Festival and the Schauspiel Frankfurt. Since 2014 she has toured with Rolf Kohlrausch with musical readings.

Rolf Kohlrausch, a former student of Branka Musulin, Sontraud Speidel and Leonard Hokanson, has performed in many countries in Europe and Latin America. As a teacher he worked for 33 years at the University of Augsburg and for 11 years at the University of Würzburg. Since 2019 he has been president of the Chopin Society Taunus.
