About the event
Kate Liu began playing the piano at the age of four. At six she was admitted to the programme for gifted young musicians at the Yamaha Music School in Singapore. When she was eight, she moved with her family to Chicago, USA. In Chicago she studied piano with Alan Chow, Micah Yui and Emilio del Rosario in the Academy programme for gifted young pianists and string players at the Music Institute of Chicago. She graduated from New Trier High School in Winnetka, Illinois, in 2012 and is currently studying for her Bachelor of Music at the Curtis Institute of Music under Robert McDonald. She also studies with Dang Thai Son.
She has won several prizes at international piano competitions: in 2015 third prize (bronze medal) and the Polish Radio special prize for the best performance of a mazurka at the 17th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw; in 2015 first prize at the Third Asia-Pacific International Chopin Competition in Daegu, South Korea; in 2014 finalist at the Montreal International Musical Competition; in 2012 third prize at the Eastman Young Artist International Piano Competition in Rochester; in 2010 first prize at the New York International Piano Competition; in 2010 third prize at the Thomas & Evon Cooper International Competition in Oberlin.
Kate Liu has performed with the Warsaw Philharmonic, the Poznań Philharmonic Orchestra and the orchestras of Daegu, Evanston, Montreal, Rochester, Hilton Head, Cleveland and Skokie Valley. At the age of 14 she played Schubert's Fantasy in F minor with Lang Lang at the Chicago Symphony Center.
